Look: I am eager to learn stuff I don't know--which requires actively courting and posting smart disagreement.

But as you will understand, I don't like to post things that mischaracterize and are aimed to mislead.

Haiku Wednesday

Generosity

I

Libertarians:
"Selfishness is a virtue."
I won't give them that!

II

Giving from the heart
To someone whose need is great
Is an act of love.

On St. Patrick's Day

They came in hunger,
Leaving behind their green home
For new life and hope.

I'm new to this weekly haiku thing but not to the form. You visited my blog this morning and I'm happy to meet you. All three of your haiku are outstanding, all very different and thought-provoking. I'm very moved by number II and III. The Libertarian one puzzles me in its content. Is that what Libertarians believe? I thought they were rather left-leaning myself, like you describe yourself. As in:
Government is bad
Individuality
Is the guiding light.

I love all your haikus,
drawn more to the second one.

Just want to wish you HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!

Have you a great one!

Thanks, all, for the visits and the comments.

Libertarians are mostly as you describe, politically. There is some appeal there. But I wouldn't call them left leaning. Not at all. Economically, they are laissez faire capitalists, and quite willing to accept all the rapaciousness and structural inequality that goes along with it. The verse is a direct reference to Ayn Rand's "The Virtue of Selfishness." Rand was a whack-job, but Glibertarians love her.

Cheers!

My Irish ancestors would appreciate your St. Patrick's Day sentiments. It was a terrible thing to have to leave their homeland, yet at the same time to embrace a great hope.

P.S. I enjoyed your post the other day about "The Facts" and smiled at your mellow yellow haiku too.
