This should be the best time of life, but . . . (instead, we are become flaming squid huggers)
Look: I am eager to learn stuff I don't know--which requires actively courting and posting smart disagreement.
But as you will understand, I don't like to post things that mischaracterize and are aimed to mislead.

Wow!
Nice.
What fun you are having!
Way more than I am.
Carry on!

So, uhm, what's with putting the trombones in the second row, when they need room for their slides and those silly saxophonists don't? Or is the thought that the trombonists might accidentally decapitate audience members (as vs. saxophonists) with their slides if placed in the front row? Curious penguins are... curious!

Not sure. I'll take a guess, though. Saxes generate their sound at about the abdominal level, trombones at about the shoulder level. In the 2nd row, saxes would be playing into our backs.
As is, the trombones can get lost in the middle. Probably would be worse for saxes.
Trumpets stand and play over our heads.
Chair arrangement is important for slide room, so your question is quite practical.
The slide is a blunt instrument. Decapitation is unlikely, though some saxophonists do have flat spots on the back of the head.
Cheers!
