...This is Kenton's own sound, in every detail.

Do check it out.

I'm a big Basie fan as well. Raucus at times, sure. But -- When I was in college, I played in a band and our theme song was Lil Darling.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMibKxQWRnw

(Hmmm. perfect tempo, but there seems to be an intonation problem - probably an alto.)

Also, Basies's is my fav version of Ellington's "Mellow Tone."

Anything from the Neal Hefti or Sammy Nestico Catalogues is worth while.Jazzbumpahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07337490817307473659noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4290163255778893789.post-50970895048590842662009-06-30T23:05:16.436-04:002009-06-30T23:05:16.436-04:00Then, with the mellophoniums leading the brass ent...Then, with the mellophoniums leading the brass entry, the sound becomes so lush it evokes images of someone far more voluptuous than delicate Natalie Wood.

Ray Chandler's ghost cracked a smile.

SK does Bernstein eh. I think I prefer SK's own sound, but may have to check it out (I like that one instrumental break, for the street dance or somethin'. Want to leef in Amer-ee-ka, eh).

I dig the Kenton minor sound, not just blooze, but with the odd changes, lots of chromaticism, and the trombones, trumpets (m-phone too I guess), then some great alto. Artistry in Rhythm does it--though there are others--the "intermission riff" from the London sessions does it, and the SK arrangement of the Legrange piece also. A few obscure Ellington suites from late 50s captures that 50s noir sound, maybe some Gil Evans--Mingus at his best. And lest we forget Sinatra's bands, Riddle (tho' yes a bit tacky at times). Angel Eyes, paysano.......

Basie's band was just too raucous and hack-like for that, however talented and tight.Jhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11567400697675996283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4290163255778893789.post-76671065411542787992009-06-30T22:54:47.399-04:002009-06-30T22:54:47.399-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Jhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11567400697675996283noreply@blogger.com
